Honoring Veterans

Veteran Funeral Benefits

Families should gather the veteran’s DD-214 or discharge papers before meeting with the funeral home. Veterans must have been discharged under conditions other than dishonorable.

Eligible veterans may receive:

  • Burial in a VA national cemetery
  • Opening and closing of the grave
  • Burial or columbarium placement
  • Perpetual care of the gravesite
  • Government-issued headstone or marker
  • U.S. burial flag
  • Presidential Memorial Certificate
  • Committal service with military honors

Eligible veterans may also receive government headstones, markers, or medallions for private cemeteries.

Note: VA gravesites cannot be reserved in advance.

Government Headstones & Markers

The Department of Veterans Affairs provides a government headstone or marker at no cost for eligible veterans worldwide.

Available styles include:

  • Upright granite or marble headstones
  • Flat granite, marble, or bronze markers
  • Niche markers for columbarium placement

When burial takes place in a national or state veterans cemetery, the cemetery typically orders the marker on behalf of the family.

Placement in private cemeteries may involve additional installation or setting fees.

U.S. Burial Flag

The VA provides a United States burial flag at no cost to honor a veteran’s military service. The flag is used to drape the casket or accompany the urn during the funeral service.

Eligibility includes:

  • Veterans who served during wartime
  • Veterans who died on active duty after May 27, 1941
  • Veterans who served after January 31, 1955
  • Certain peacetime veterans discharged before June 27, 1950
  • Certain members of the Reserves and other qualifying service groups

After the service, the folded flag is presented to the next of kin as a keepsake.

Applications can be completed using VA Form 27-2008, typically arranged by the funeral director.
